Winner of The Most Outstanding Production Award at the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2004, and recipient of the 2004 Green Room Award for Outstanding Melbourne Fringe / Independent Theatre Production, The Candy Butchers –A Circus Sweetmeat has been heralded as one of the most important works to emerge from the new Australian circus movement.
This tasty circus treat … is a well-honed hour of physical feats, humour and memorable images.
Combining dark humour and comic tragedy with high-level clowning and circus skills, contemporary circus luminaries Derek Ives & Azaria Universe join forces with National Institute of Circus Arts graduates Jess Love and DJ Garner to serve up a piece of theatre that is delicately touching, visually enchanting and physically stunning.
The Candy Butchers was born from a desire to delve deep into the world of old-time circus and physical storytelling to create a high risk human spectacle. This premiere work is the culmination of more than a decade of international work in circus and sideshow.
Join The Candy Butchers -on a humorous voyage into a neo-vaudevillian world of an imaginary sideshow era as they blend the perverse with the poetic to create a circus with heart … a twisted black one!
